Eyeliner Techniques for Hooded Lids

Hooded eyes have a fold of skin that can hide liner applied directly on the lid. These techniques are designed to keep your liner visible and impactful all day.

Tip 01

Draw with Eyes Open

Apply liner with your eyes open and looking straight ahead. This lets you see exactly where the hood falls so you can place liner above it for maximum visibility.

Tip 02

Tightline the Upper Waterline

Lining the upper waterline (the inner rim of the upper lash line) adds depth and definition without adding bulk that the hood can cover up.

Tip 03

Keep the Line Thin at the Inner Corner

A thicker line at the inner corner can make hooded eyes look smaller. Start thin and gradually build thickness toward the outer corner to open up the eye.

Tip 04

Extend Outward, Not Upward

Extend your liner slightly beyond the outer corner in a horizontal direction rather than angling sharply upward, which can disappear under the hood.

Tip 05

Skip Heavy Lower Liner

A thick lower lash line can close the eye down. If you line the lower lid, keep it to the outer third only to maintain an open, lifted look.

Tip 06

Use a Pencil to Map the Wing

Before committing with liquid liner, sketch the wing shape with a soft pencil. This lets you adjust placement until the wing is visible when your eyes are fully open.

Achieving a Wing That Stays Visible

The classic wing can disappear under a hooded fold. These adjustments keep it in view:

  • Mark the wing endpoint with your eye open, not closed
  • Angle the flick outward along the lower lash line's natural direction
  • Make the wing longer than you think — the hood shortens it visually
  • Use a waterproof liquid liner for a crisp, transfer-resistant edge
  • Set with a tiny dusting of translucent powder to lock the line in place
  • Check the result with eyes fully open before the liner dries

Keep Your Liner in Place All Day

Hooded lids press against liner throughout the day, making smudging a common challenge. These steps help your look last.

🧴

Prime the Lid First

An eyeshadow primer creates a dry, grippy base that dramatically reduces transfer from the hood pressing on the lid.

💧

Choose Waterproof Formulas

Waterproof or long-wear liners resist the moisture and friction that hooded lids create throughout the day.

✨

Set with Powder

Lightly dust a matching eyeshadow or translucent powder over the liner once applied to lock it and absorb excess oils.

🪄

Let It Dry Fully

Keep your eyes open for 30–60 seconds after applying liner so it sets before the hood makes contact with the lid.
